Thanks, nikki and greedy kite. And yes, GK, I thought the “little time” was m(inute). Silly me! Having (sort of) finished it, I’m sending this off now, before I realise I need to check my answers again.

You're lucky if you CAN send it off --- I'm still struggling with the technicalities of submitting here
(unless of course they've improved the working in the course of the afternoon)!

I was surprised it did work, after all the problems I had changing the security level of Java, just to display the grid. However, it did display after a few minutes or after I'd restarted the computer. At least it's something if you can save it.

Still nothing working here. I've asked a friend far away if he could try submitting for me. Presumably nobody on this thread not interested in actually submitting could submit it for me? I've tried re-installing Java etc : nothing works, and I'm at the end of my tether!

You mean you'd give somebody your answers and trust them to submit them under your name????

GK, aren't there days and weeks to go till the closing date? The Guardian site could be running properly very soon.

And Pendragon: yes, that may seem crazy to you, but I see no alternative at the moment --- unless the G. at last gets round to putting its site in order! The prize is not that important to me, even if s'one pinched it from me. After a day of solving & parsing, after all, it's pretty frustrating not to be able to find some alternative way of submitting the solution . understand?
