Thanks for the try, SDL, but the link didn't work.

I probably wouldn't have been able to do it anyway!

It's almost embarrassing to say this, but (after having the same probs as all of you downloading) I've just finished: Clue 14a is really extremely ingenious!
And Chris: Don't give up --- once you get the hidden theme, it's not that difficult!

You may be tempted to laugh, but...............I now can't submit: it says "Java not properly installed" then "JRE collision detected" (whatever that may be). I tried raising the security level to maximum, but it didn't work. Does anyone know if there's any point in lowering it to minimum? Or what else I can try? I suppose theoretically if one of you is not entering anyway then I could send you my solution and ask you to submit it for me (no-one can send a second attemot from the same computer of course) but that's hardly likely. I've complained by mail to the Crossword Editor and to the UserHelp address (technical) but of course may well not receive a reply, or not a workable one, unfortunately, judging from past experience. can anyone see any other solution? Pretty frustrating to
have the solution here but no way of submitting it! And btw it really is a nice one................

I don't normally get the Java prob but did this time...I had to download the latest version of Java and change the security setting to medium at the control panel.

Enjoyed it but wonder if instructions have been accidently missed...they may refer to 9ac?

I can see a version of the "theme" element in most of the clues except 1ac...haven't satisfactorily parsed 24ac yet, agree with GK...some nice clues.

Well, after all the kerfuffle with Java (and then having to save it to USB and take off elsewhere to print!) I now find I'm completely stumped by the puzzle itself.

Apart from a (possible) answer to 13 down, I can't see a way in.

A tiny hint might be the jolt I need, if anyone can help.

Hi GK. From what you say, the Java thing is obviously not working as it should. It's the Java applet that's causing the problem I'm sure, and the Guardian people will sort things out in due course presumably.

Also, the special instructions should be available (I'm guessing), given that there is no text indicating the cut-off date for entry.

A bit of patience needed methinks - it's only Day One after all ....

13D was where I got started cmk...

pig/baboon tails (incorporating a theme element, only one letter in this case)...Chanel put up....101.

Clap if you've got it!

All very comforting, James --- I only hope you're right!

Applause indeed, Ixion!

Is this a thematic clue, as I have a possible 26 across which could be (very tenuously) linked

.................and I agree, ixion: 9a can be the key to the whole puzzle, if it doesn't become apparent from the many examples!
