22a: first word in clue is superfluous.
The rest consists of 2 definitions (if you pron. the answer differently)

I don't have the crossword lvs but 22 looks like the word overdrawn should be removed and then you are left with a word which means one joining something together and another word for bank

11a: that's where I'd got to, gk. It's the ones in the middle I'm having trouble with, given that my 7D only seems to change to an 'a' or an 'e' where it crosses 11A, if it's to remain a real word.

The "e" is correct!
The middle of the new 11a is in 2 parts!

Nope, still can't see the other 11A. I have 6D meaning 'limitless' and 8D meaning 'without pastimes'. Beyond that, I'm stumped and don't understand the 'in 2 parts' hint.

I mean, I have only one word which will fit, but I discounted it because it seems perjorative and not in keeping with the theme.

But it IS E(nglish) + man's name. So I guess that must be it.

I don't think there is a connection with the theme. You're right!
