ixion: was the original answer to 11a that eccentric gentleman? I didn't quite get the allusion -- and in the end it didn't matter, but I'd like to know (comes again, I fear, from being out of the country too long).

When it says the initial letter of each superfluous word in order makes a phrase, is it numerical order or across then down? Thanks

7d: 1st wd superfluous; def. last 2; between, word play divided 2,5 (change the 3rd before entering)
11a: ref. to name of man described in "work", as word means 1st 4 words of clue; last word superfluous (change letters 1, 3 & 5 before entering).
