The "e" is correct!
The middle of the new 11a is in 2 parts!

Nope, still can't see the other 11A. I have 6D meaning 'limitless' and 8D meaning 'without pastimes'. Beyond that, I'm stumped and don't understand the 'in 2 parts' hint.

I mean, I have only one word which will fit, but I discounted it because it seems perjorative and not in keeping with the theme.

But it IS E(nglish) + man's name. So I guess that must be it.

I don't think there is a connection with the theme. You're right!

11A (before alteration) certainly seems to have craved attention and was definitely called much worse things...thanks for a very enjoyable Genius Tramp.

ixion: was the original answer to 11a that eccentric gentleman? I didn't quite get the allusion -- and in the end it didn't matter, but I'd like to know (comes again, I fear, from being out of the country too long).

Indeed GK, the work is about (and dedicated to by the artist) 11A.
