Stumped on 1A and 10A - any help appreciated.

That was so long ago! Thanks I appreciate your help, it confirms what I think, but I can't convince myself on the word-play. Still can't see 10A either!

I think 1ac is a whole clue &lit when the extra word is removed. No additional wordplay that I can see.

10ac describes an "after eight", convoluted linear wordplay..

women/remove centre from after/eight although ultimately/unwrapping mint

I have N as the last letter of 10A, and I felt sure that my 9D was correct which is why I am stumped. Thanks to both of you for your help.
