I had most of the solutions in place by late Monday but I'm completely unable to parse 8D. Is Latin involved? If so, is "well?" the definition somehow? "Alongside" = "in"?

8dn - definition is "well". You're looking for half a comedy duo, popular in the UK in the '80s and '90s.

Thank you, peterm. I have the handicap of living a bit too far west of the Atlantic. All solved now!

Wow, I go to bed & all the elves come out to play!

Thanks to Perec @27. Struggled with 19D for a couple of hours last night & gave up. When you said "noun", it immediately popped into my mind.

Thanks Peterm. Like Garble, too far west. Had the (reasonable) answer, but could make no sense of PACE.

Interesting that MOT works both ways.

Don't think anyone mentioned 2D.

The pre-mod answer is clear, but I have the moved part as the last 3 letters & they go UP.

If the last 3 letters of the post-move is the name, I've never heard of it.

All the rest of the NW is solid.

Thanks ixion.

Looked at Wiki last night & only saw the Chinese, which didn't seem likely. Should have scrolled down further. Must have been beat.

Now all is right with the world, and on to the Spectator tomorrow.

Cheers.

Hello everyone. I am ready to submit a solution for the grid, but one clue is bothering me: 6D. My solution (before modification) doesn't fit with the definition which I take to be "imbecilic".

Assume the word can be represented thus: abcdefgh (8 letters).

I have abc as a 4-letter word with the first letter removed, meaning "Mark".

The "name" is given by cdef.

Do you agree on this?

Agreed James...think the definition is OK though, in the sense of "stupid" (or even batty)
