OK, so far so good. My BIG problem is the last 5 letters of the word. Can't fit these letters to "speech".

I'm sure I've got something wrong, but darned if I can see any other possibility.

Last four for the speech bit - other letter is a cricket abbrev

Ah! Cricket, of course.

Well it seems that I'm still OK. The last four letters are not what I would call "speech"; more of a violent diatribe.

Thanks to the early pioneers for putting me on the right track with this one. One thing puzzles me about 13a: I've never come across this word with a 'c' in the middle, and can't really find it in any dictionary. Can anyone enlighten me please?

It's ENID. Had never heard of the resort. It's a composite clue.

15A is 3 letters for "higher ed." (abbreviation)
I for "in" (Chambers)
4 letters for "bus."

Think of the expression, "It's a D--- !"

Mrs T - I suspect you have transposed a couple of vowels, 13A is in Chambers, if you swap your 1st and 2nd vowels you should get it.
