Thanks for the hints above. I had many unparsed answers including the rather fine 23d which I found most enjoyable once given the keys to the kingdom thanks to Geeker and ilippu. What a skilfully crafted clue.
I was well and truly skewered by Vlad till coming here…

I love the phrase in 16a - seems v British to me as never heard while living in the US of A.

Still stuck on 25a which seems to have an obvious answer but how is it put together? Could someone enlighten me please!

Jono, if I reverse the 4 it doesn't actually make a word and has nothing to do with "hall" - is this another I've got wrong?

My answer does mean "light"
