I have only ever heard the word followed by "cuts". See where you can fit an E in.

And therein lay the problem Chris. Looked up every possibility and there it is. A word I'd never heard before.

Hello all
Bit of a struggle for me but two left, 19d and 21a. Any hints, please.

Also, COD 19a for its brevity. Lovely

Hi Philo

21a anagram of a very obscure word I'd never heard of. An instrument.

19d a famous Calvin. Probably not the one you're thinking of. Parses 2, 4, 2.

Thanks Rocky
I just couldn't see how the anagram worked. Obscure indeed.
As to 19d, I'd given up on the obvious Calvin, but otherwise I'm non the wiser, I'm afraid - I think I can guess the first two, but after that I'm drawing blanks

All done. Definitely a severe test from Imogen, partly due to many words I didn't know. I don't understand 24d and even though I've put it in I only know the first word part of 28a.

FOI 17a. LOI 28a.

COD 12a for its fabulous misdirection.

He's in a list of famous leaders of a country. But certainly not one of the better known.

A female singer had the same name.

My FOI 17a too.

24d the cardinals aren't religious

28a divide it 2,3

There are a couple of famous quotes about 19d:
When it was announced he ws dead, someone (I haven't been able to find the source) said "how did they know?"

And then there's the story of him and his wife visiting a chicken farm, which gave rise to the name of a mdeical effect!

Finally got there, thanks Rocky. I hadn't come across that 'smell' word before.
And thanks Chris for the interesting info about Calvin.
FOI, like many others, 1d.
