It's a colloquial expression for a woman (usually, but not always) going with somone of a considerably "lower class".

Gave up yesterday , still had all of NE and SW corners to do . Always find Imogen difficult , not compatible wavelengths.
Decided to have another try today and quickly made progress then another hold up but read the threads and with your help have finished . It was more hard graft rather than pleasure but I have managed to finish an Imogen prize.
FOI 19
LOI 11
COD 25 but thought 14 and 16 very good too.
Just one query I think I am correct in my parsing of 1d but would welcome confirmation . Hope you are all enjoying the
“tropical” weather!

Hi Dhope,

1d - is a double definition. 1st is "one way to control rioting" (and females I know have carried it for personal protection) and 2nd is "staff" (as a noun)

Thanks Brendan , yes I thought that was it, spent too long trying to fit “one way” into parsing! How dumb is that!

Finished, vrry early for us. Got the N E corner first.

Is 11 just a single punning definition? (Ie "not that kind of score")

Was puzzled by tge "u" of 16 until seeing explanations, and used CrosswordSolver on a few, including 13 where I input my 4 crossers as an 11-letter word and it came up trumps.

Where does the last letter of 27 come from? I parse it as 2 7 a phrase matching first two words, definition is last two words but ...?

Foi: 6
Loi: 24
Cod: 25 was clever , but plenty others too

Hi Pam,

Doing 11d is part of most music exams when learning an instrument. You have to read and play a "score" you've never seen before.

27a - 6 letter "people's" around 4 letter "show keenness".

.... 27a

I too initially got mixed up with the "keenness" thinking it was 7 letters - it was only when that meant the outer 3 letters then made no sense that I realised what was going on:-)
