Brendan, as a geek I recall that 22s are extensively discussed in Douglas Hofstadter's Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid, for instance.

I've just been looking at examples of 22d's and the only one I'm familiar with, and appreciate, is the sound of one hand clapping. Most of the others I found on Google were nonsensical to the point of being ridiculous, but I'm prepared to admit that maybe they just went over my head.

I derive much more benefit and greater meaning from philosophical examples such as Wittgenstein's '5 red apples'.

I know there not the same thing but, in a way, they kind of are...

Good fun I thought, and a fairly quick solve for me.

Following comments below I recalled seeing the two letters in 16d fairly recently, and in fact it was Imogen in December which followed a Spectator from that time.

22d was an answer in Gemelo No. 8.

Very enjoyable prize from Imogen. I think I was on the right wavelength because more gentle than recent weeks. But no less clever for that. But I'm stuck on 22d as my LOI. Despite some quite spiritual, philosophical and other unfathomable hints earlier I'm not seeing it.

Hi Rocky, 22d parses 2,1,1 where the 2 is a two letter acronym meaning to ‘floor’.

Hi rocky
22 parses 2 (floor, as in boxing, perhaps), 1,1. Put that together and Google!

This looked impossible to start with, but in fact went quickly after a few were entered.

Apologies for the late thanks Chrise and Jono. The Parkrun was beckoning.

All done and thanks to Imogen. Nice and clever and not too taxing. FOI 6a. Loved 10a and 13d.

Have a great Saturday all.
