The theme...
Help with the theme may also be sought here. The help given should be fairly gentle in nature. Aim for a nudge, a pointer in the right direction - and avoid anything that would spoil the puzzle for others. Any posts which, even inadvertently,reveal too much of the theme are likely to be removed.

Well, I certainly learned something finding the theme in this one! Still have a couple of parsings to work out, but done otherwise. Thanks to setter.

I think that I have parsed all the clues, though I'm not happy with (my interpretation of) 6d.

36a and 6d particularly chewy, though they both work fine once fully understood. Interesting puzzle, I thought.

Could someone kindly confirm if letters 1,2,5 & 9 in 4a from the intersecting down answers have a alphabetical sum of 51? If so I cannot find any word that fits the clue. Can't get anywhere in the SW corner at the moment.

There's a reason for that Gitto. I presume you haven't yet already identified the 7 clashes

I, sadly, only have 3 clashes at the moment. I hope that is why I cannot penetrate the SW corner and can't solve 21a.

gitto - whilst I've done 4a, it sounds as though I'm stuck in exactly the same place as you. I had been making steady progress but I've currently ground to a halt.

Simon, I've manged to move on a little. My SW quadrant is now 80% full but I have bigger problems. Firstly, there are 3-4 clues that I cannot parse and 5-6 that I still need to solve. Secondly, I only have 4 clashes and finally, I have only identified 14 misprints and the letters derived from those make no sense at all to me - unless they aren't English words.
