I'm also struggling with 25a and d and still stuck even with your hint. Also baffled by 12a, none of the possibles seem.to be right, maybe I've got a letter wrong _E_O_R. Any gentle nudges welcome

Your final letter R of 12a is wrong. 12a parses as (1,1) inside 4, defn. "fillet".

25d is a charade (3,3), definition "setter".

25a parses as (2,4), definition "root". The 4 is a 5-letter word with the first letter removed.

Thought I was going to have to appeal to forum for help with last five then the penny dropped late last night. Never cease to be amazed at how the brain continues to work on the clues even when we have given up then suddenly the answer pops up out of nowhere.

Another brilliant prize crossword from Brockwell ,definitely wow factor and such satisfaction when completed. Great way to spend most of a dark , miserable , cold and wet November weekend!

I’m with Rogerm and rocky7 on 5d. Not many people carry alternative abbreviations for units of dynamic viscosity around in their heads.

All done - great theme once I'd found it!

If anyone's still around, a mere 5 hours before the next puzzle goes live... I've got a totally blank NW corner. I'd appreciate a nudge on any of
1d, 2d, 3d, 4d, 17d, 18d; 7a, 9a, 12a, 16a.

7 looks as if ought to be an anagram of atoryguru, or perhaps of joint followed by acon ...?

1d, presumably N, [new], E = a gangster?

4d has to have some connection with Noel of 23

18d has R as 3rd letter, which might explain Romeo, but "pon" doesn't mean love, so that's one failed idea

etc

(Tried to ask this last night but my phone wasn't playing nicely with the forum - now opened it up on the desktop machine for the first time)

I don't have the puzzle to hand any more, so I'm trying to remember the answers.

1d is very clever. It parses 4,1,1, and the definiton is (the usual crossword) gangster.

3d is GK - a currently well know darts plaer with the last letter missing.

4d is the central to the theme. "Fashionable" (4) then "dolly" (3).

Hi, Pam. 7 is tricky. It’s a joint “rolled” (reversed) followed by a + a specific Tory; definition guru .

You’re on the right track with 18. Hard here means physically though.
