OldWolfie, in 22 it's not the ox that is rare. Definition is the first four words. Wordplay is simpler than you might think, giving an extra letter.

18D Definition is the first word. Wordplay gives a word for stud in a word for rushed. There is an extra letter.

I feel a bit silly about 22A now, but 18D had really stumped me.
With these two sorted out, the whole thing fell into place very pleasingly.
