Think of famous Fred’s, in all media.

Trade union is TU; if you have the answer, you can reverse engineer the wordplay by finding the relevant six-letter other part.

I do like it a lot when setters use the Chambers definitions verbatim; it makes for a very useful checksum.

26a - 2 letter "trade union" the 6 letter "no longer capable of effective action" (unusual word) minus first letter/'after leader's dismissal' and minus extra letter.
