Thanks, Quisling - I thought your parsing of the clue was neat and nice and worked perfectly. I didn't really like the clue itself, the surface reading seemed a bit clunky somehow!

Please help me in parsing / solving this cryptic clue -
"Scientist - one about to become a philosopher (8)"

The answer is the name of a philosopher. Start with a 5 letter scientist then add one letter for one + the usual two letters for about.

A tricky one. Three-letter noun for coach and one-letter abbreviation for about in a + word for forced. Definition is jump as in surprise attack
