You need to use square brackets for bold, italic, etc.

Yes, thanks, chrise, I think for some reason I had the shift key down. Unfortunately this site doesn't allow you to preview a comment before posting.
I'm still baffled by the supposed connection between 12A and 21A - particularly given the 6th letter of 21A. Googling shows no results when I use 1-4 of 12A and 1-6 of 21A as two words. I'm sure I have the right solutions as I have most of the crossers.
Not sure what the 'theme' might be; for some reason this seem to be readily deducible by those who complete these in 20 mins or less, but not me. There are a few food items in the solution but that's not helping me with 5 ones I can't do that I'm giving up on.
17A is particularly resistant to my limit brain power!

Hi again jenna....
Do you have 13d? Try combining the first four letters of that with the first four letters of 12, then add the first six of 21.

12 first, then 13d, then 21a. If that doesn't work, you must have one wrong!

I'm American, know the actor only through crosswords, but found the connex(ct)ion by googling

(first 4 letters of 12) (first 4 letters of 13d) (first 5 letters of 21a),

which worked even though the first 6 letters of 21 are thematic.
I think it was intentional on Brockwell's part, btw.

Thanks chrise now I see the 3-word string that means something (no spoilers here!). I was miscounting the letters of 21A in my head for some 'odd' reason.

17a: Defn "Cold" (uncommon word I had to verify).
Parses as [(1,1) inside 3] where 3 is "relief"
