I disagree mildly about 7d, which has a single abbreviation for "barrels", given in Chambers.

That’s very true, Iratus, and I’m sure what Sabre intended, though my ungainly construction is, I think, possible. Thanks

Thank you very much quisling, with those hints I was able to finish the puzzle! I am currently armed only with a digital Chambers, but I will try to get my hands on Bradford's dictionary.

I had never heard of these abbreviations for barrel(s), although they are of course very natural now you point them out.

I am still a bit confused about the parsing for the 9ac spinner. Am I to take it that those last 2 letters are an abbreviation for infant? Perhaps that's an oversight of my Chambers.

Before I look at 4884...

...why I don't like puzzles with lots of clashes in a row (yes, 4883, that means you!)
8D Name that is almost forgotten - clearly the old favourite LOS (almost LOST). Misprint for 'Fame'...later I decided that 'name' is 'reputation' so no misprint needed.

Turned out to be a complete red herring but as all three letters could have been clashes, no reason to doubt my answer.

I loved this clue in Saturday's Guardian cryptic: WG rejected cricket practice, having picked up a hundred previously (8).

Well done lemon. This is a difficult puzzle, from one of the toughest setters.

Sorry lemon, I just saw your question. Check Chambers for the the last two letters of the answer.

I mean as a word, not an abbreviation.

Lemon, I don’t know how you access the digital version of Chambers, but if you use an iPhone/iPad, Bradford’s is available on the iOS Kindle app.
