I thought this was a brilliant crossword but still not sure how 9 "could be direct" or why 10 (where I once lived) is a follower of Washington.

I have to say, I'm quite irritated by having identical clues with two possible answers. Call me old-fashioned, but I think a clue should only ever point to one correct answer. I'm with Chrise on this one; I shouldn't need the crossers to know which of the two equally-valid answers is the 'correct' one. Willing to persevere with it, though.

Prospero I thought that too. I just assumed that in the order of incorporation it comes after. Without the pairing theme I'm not sure it would be acceptable to be honest.

I read those two as…
9 direct + answer go together to form a term.
10 Washington + answer is a place it seems. Perhaps there’s something better.

thanks jono - of course I got 9 as soon as I posted - head-banging moment. As regards 10, I think "historically" suggests the incorporation interpretation ... wrote a poem recently about the obscenity of all that!

Did the park run this morning, came back and had another stab and am now at a stalemate at the end of my second go at this. I think I may have to put it down again. Stuck in the NW with 2d both 5s and 9a left to go.

Let the subconcious get to work.

He scored the winning goal against Liverpool didn’t he. His early death was very sad, I think he was Ian Wrights big mate

rocky, couple of hints: 5d is an inclusion and 2d parses 1,4,1.

Hello RobDales
See my earlier reply to ChrisE - each to their own, I guess. One of the best puzzles that I have ever seen takes this theme to its ultimate conclusion. All clues had two equally valid solutions, and were so constructed that two entirely different grids of solutions were possible. To win the prize, you had to submit both grids.
