I think it works on the basis that it came after in time, not necessarily directly after. That's why I felt it was a tad weak if I'm honest. But I like Brendan so I'll let him off.

Great fun, most enjoyable crossword I've done in a while. I don't think "follower" has to indicate "immediate successor". The 12A/18A pair made me laugh out loud.
