I've thrown this away in disgust. I heartily dislike clues that can't be resolved until the crossers are in place.

OK, that was great fun. It took me a long time to get 13 8 but after that the rest came together. Lots of fun aha moments like 10-22 and still impressed by the construction of 12-18. Amazing work Brendan and thanks!

Sorry you feel that way ChrisE. For me, there are plenty of puzzles where each clue is a stand alone solve, and I really enjoy the additional test of a more holistic challenge.

Interesting puzzle. The symmetrical placement of the pairings and the fact they include all across answers is impressive. I agree with Geeker’s second comment, though I don’t see how Brendan could have got around it.

I don’t understand the football references… what am I missing?

Football référence is to Rocky (David Rocastle) and is the user name of a regular poster but nothing to do with this puzzle.

1980s. The late great David Rocastle. Always wore 7 and nicknamed Rocky. Taken from us too soon.
