How can one 'apply the theme' when one is just starting out?

How do you deal with identical clues with no way of knowing which of the two solutions goes where?

Just curious. I don't think I'm even going to try this one as I'm baffled.

You just need to solve some of the down clues and it becomes really clear which solutions go where because the crossing letters leave you in no doubt.

BB, funnily enough I was thinking of the same puzzle with the two grids. I think it was Twin but I may be wrong.

I also recall a puzzle by Boatman which appeared just prior to the Brexit result, where depending on your interpretation of the clues to grid revealed either ‘leave’ or ‘remain’, or something like that.

I'm feeling a bit unwell today so the crossword brain has switched to low-power mode. Maybe just a few minutes here and there will make some progress.

Thanks geeker. Got 2d directly as I picked up the puzzle again. I'm wondering if 9a has been staring me in the face. Is it obvious but it's plural so should read 'inputs' ?

Birder. Michael Thomas scored the goal. Rocky was playing though.

Seems I was right about 9a. Great puzzle from Brendan apart from that clue which imo didn't work as a singular input.

FOI 20d. LOI 9a. COD I'm going 18a which works very nicely and better than its themed pairing.

Last clue 4d. Think I have it right. Can't parse it though. Took looking at a map to jog 10a.

Minno for 4d abbreviation for others plus short form of he is. Loved this gem from Brendan, found placing doubles worked easily .

COD difficult 13/8 is an obvious choice but I like 5d and 14d
