29: I'm a Yankee, and I've heard of it, so it is famous and is known by its nickname: 3,3

31: British champion (20th century)

Thank you so much, buzzb! That's what I thought for both, but still need to make 29 work. But this should get me going again.

I guess it would have helped if I hadn't carelessly written in one of the crossing downs incorrectly. Got it now. Thanks again, buzzb.

In the each/every discussion, surely if a preamble said that something was happening in every other clue it would mean alternate clues. What a rich - and confusing - language!

0pt0, now that I have completed the endgame, I can say that I found all three of my changed final entries in the Chambers Crossword Dictionary.

Oh dear. It seems there is an ambiguity then. I have an answer for one of the final transformed entries that is definitely correct and is not in Chambers.
There are many thousands of candidates for the modified grid entries so I guess this is a potential problem that the setter and editors may have not been able to exclude.
My non Chambers option is the most southeasterly in the grid. I have not changed the first letter but all others are different.
P.S. There is a very similar word in Chambers but with a different last letter which gives real real words but it is not really an acceptable thematic option.

It seems to me, smithsax, that you've hit on the right "transformation". Given how many are available in Chambers, it seems a little "off" for the setter to have opted for one which isn't there and which is only revealed to those who have Bradford's or who get lucky googling or are ??????? who didn't need to look it up at all!

Note by Admin - one word retracted as I am informed that it gives away too much information

smithsax, I have the same replacement for that south-easterly entry. I don't think they can mark us wrong, even if there is a competing entry in Chambers (which I doubt, to be honest).

Smithsax, Tonyg, your entry is definitely the intended answer and not wrong. I wouldn’t fret about it.

I think Darla is probably talking about the Chambers Crossword Dictionary, as distinct from Chambers (BRB) as we know it.

Yes, I specifically indicated Chambers Crossword Dictionary, because that's what 0pt0 said he had. Not in the regular Chambers dictionary though. And I would echo Quisling's response that you two gentleman are almost certainly correct.
