What a clever puzzle! Not too challenging a grid fill, but the second PDM took rather a long time to arrive. And to make the construction work so perfectly? Wow.
I got into trouble last week so hope I'm not revealing too much to say that one of the extra words appears to have letters in the prescribed positions that ought to fit in the central square or form part of the three friends but do not. Any helpful thoughts?
CD/Iratus, My problem is that 2 of those 4 clues are in the NE corner - which I can't crack. Also 16a works with or without "takes" in it - I am guessing that "takes" is NOT an extra word. Ambiguities like that can annoy me.
The NE corner is difficult, with only one easy answer for me. One of the clues depends on a highly obscure definition, the rest are gettable without much dictionary study.
I wondered about 16a also, and kept it in reserve.
