Thanks HW7, still a pretty obscure clue though. Still, I can get on with the endgame now.
PS totally agree with dodgepot, if it's not a challenge it's not worth doing which is why, sadly, I only complete half the puzzles though spending hours on every one of them.

Mondo,………………………………. Judy Garland? Back to the drawing board then.

Will37, i have 19 letters for 3 friends and one left over for the central square but i cant accommodate any of the two letters offered by 3 down. Am i barking up the wrong tree?

mullingar, it's very difficult to say anything without saying too much; but it is 6 down, not 3 down, which stands on its own.

I understand Will37 but im thinking 3 down is giving you a u or a z and neither letter appears in the three friends i'm thinking about. But 6 down doesnt give me the central square either.. i must be barking up the wrong tree but those diagonals suggest not. Hope this is not too explicit

mullingar, one thing which has been missing on this thread - though I can't swear to have read every post - is the connection between the title of the work in which the 4 Ladies appear and the meaning of that title and its associations and connections. This is absolutely central to the endgame. Think about it long and hard and if you don't come up with something, think some more.
I hope I haven't overstepped any boundaries but, if I have, please feel free to report it and take it down. I'm having surgery tomorrow so frankly,my dears, I don't give a damn!

Good luck, Will37, hope it goes well. Crosswords are a triviality in comparison

Mullingar, many of us have been where you are. It makes the final PDM all the more satisfying. Or frustrating?

The endgame is precise. You just(!) need to find how it works. Maybe reread the instructions with a slightly more open mind. I don't want to say too much.

Mullingar re-read mondo #69 and will37 #74 carefully. Those were the comments that helped me get out of Elgin’s trap that I’d fallen for hook line and sinker. The alternatives seem weird but google is your friend.
