A novel idea from Pangakupu. I had almost a full grid before I could make sense of the extra letters from the across clues.

Just making a start. Here’s a grid for those who find useful…

Really enjoyed this. Most of the straight(ish) clues come together with some lateral thinking, leaving the 6 referred to in the preamble. One little trap, possibly, in the latter

Have last two words of instruction. The earlier letters not organised. Have all but two of (both 4 letter words - one across one down) the straight clues.

The 6 are still elusive...as is the instruction.

Hang in there Ilippu. The first part of the instruction is a somewhat obscure specialist term. You might like to ponder on this: how can an item be replaced by itself, but still be different?

Thanks. I think I got the first word - the obscure term.

Very good I thought. I see the ‘little trap’ BuzzyBee refers to, that was my last one in.
Thanks to Pangakupu

Hmmm.... I'm finding this tricky to polish off.

I'm left with crossers in 12d which don't appear to be amenable to the modification, and one clue - 9d. Is this Buzzybee's trap, or have I gone wrong?

Also I'm struggling to justify the penultimate letter in the first word of the hidden instructions. Perhaps I'm wrong with my answer to 26ac.

...I should add that I can't parse my answer to 1ac, which I'm currently entering at 23ac, so perhaps this is part of the general confusion!

Hi SirC

Yes indeed, that is what I was referring too. You may need to inspect a device related to the theme to resolve this.
