I still can't see how to derive the necessary extra letter from 26ac.

If you look up the two-letter word formed by the letter you’re missing followed by the last letter of the answer you’ll see it means an invocation.

Ah, thanks, I had my mind set on a different invocation.

That's cleared up a lingering doubt for me too, so thanks dodgepot.

Like app, (I suspect I) was thinking of the stock English translation of the vocative from my schoolboy Latin. That, added to the fact that I tend to think of the starting point as a region rather than a city sapped my confidence. But I'm happy now :)

I have five of the modified answers and assume that 12d is the sixth but can't see the answer. Not sure how to enter the modified answers.

26a is the only clue I have a question mark against.

If my reading of it is correct, the final letter of the answer added to the theme letter give a word "used to attract attention etc.", which I was initially satisfied with but, after looking up "invocation" in Chambers, it seems that, with the exception of the one definition related to law, all the others are to do with religion and used in prayer or when invoking a saint or deity, which couldn't be further from how, in my experience, I've heard this little word used. In fact, I'd go as far as to say that it's usually used as the precursor to some hostile act.

All this now makes me wonder if I've the wrong answer?

Apologies, I have no idea why that appeared twice!

Bren, reverse the two letter word you have for attracting attention and look it up… I didn’t know that meaning either.
