Aahh, what a dunce I am!

Many thanks Jono, that makes a lot more sense: 😀

flame,

from the instruction it is clear that they go into the 6 spots of their clue-numbers but not into their original spot.

Size and the crossers will guide you assuming your modifications are correct.

12d entry (source number is different) requires a different kind of modification.

Thank you. I am nearly there but don't seem to have the answer to filling in 29a.

Flame, the 'waving' in the clue indicates an anagram, which goes inside an establishment, outpost, place.

Off topic, but a general question. Do you think that compilers have broadened their expectations of solvers' GK since the arrival of Google and the like, and is that a good thing?

BuzzyBee @55, on the subject of GK, today’s Guardian cryptic is an interesting case in point. I’ve seen several commenters suggesting that the required general knowledge is beyond what could reasonably be expected.
However, I think that an expectation that solvers have recourse to the internet is reasonable these days.
Personally, I rather enjoy a little research.

Thanks Jono. I agree that almost all solvers are very adept at researching unfamiliar words and people - no problem with that. What prompted this was a few Speccies ago, where unclued solutions were stations on a railway line in north Scotland. I was fortunate in that my wife travelled on that line frequently as a child, and spotted it immediately from the crossers.

I had not seen today's Guardian cryptic, but have now looked. In this puzzle, we are provided with both a general category and a wordplay in the clues, and that makes a Google search straightforward. In the case of the Spectator puzzle that I mentioned, one is given neither, other than a very oblique reference in the puzzle title, and I do think that is going a bit far.
