9d - A then 4 letter "bother" minus extra letter/'lot of' goes around "motoring problem" - definition "what inspires"

There was another way to reach both 1 and 9, now that I see the significance of "clues are presented in ascending order" ...... so, go down from 11 for 1; go up from 29 or go down from 12 for 9.

Unlike you, I have zero knowledge on the theme.

I saw that. Fortunately, I had all the crossers at the destination, including its middle portion*, so I needed only 2 letters.

Pretty well spot on. Just need a 4 letter word for "wrong" to insert inside the anagram.

Kirky, for “wrong” think “sin”. Your definition is right but “with” might have been better than “for”.
