I said "some parts of the north", but come to think of it, I suppose it could be so in the south west too.

I agree Micky. Surely the second syllable of 21A is pronounced as a schwa by most people?

even if the second syllable in the answer is a schwa, surely the second syllable of the "homophone" isn't?

Grr. Was pleased to get 26,27 early on, but then couldn't break into the bottom of the grid. After about half an hour I twigged that it was in fact 27,26 and then the last bit fell into place in ten mins flat, including a number of answers that I'd discounted as they didn't fit in with 26/27.

Apropos of nothing in particular I always felt that Bodie and Doyle were a thinly disguised copy of 7d and partner. But enjoyed both.

Chris, isn’t the third syllable of the solution a homophone synonym of observed ending in W?

I think this is the boxer inside a synonym of"giant" rather than of "giant" itself, i.e. an indirect anagram.

Yes, but the "giant" isn't anagrammed, just beheaded, so OK, I think.

Beheaded "giant " gives "iant" which would not provide the solution.

Yes, but it's a synonym for giant that's beheaded.
