The first word of (2,5) is thematic, as you've noticed. Break the word down into 3,2 where the 2 indicates "-like".

Yes, that’s it, Dapper. The theme certainly helped and I’ve just realised the significance of the precise timing. Good fun I thought.

Only just picked this up. I believe Brendan that is in fact where the term originated. Though I'm not sure Paul should be using that phrase in this day and age.

Hi Dapper, as Jono says, that's it exactly - in my defence, I've only come across that clue device about eight million times so, you know ... 😂

Hi Jono, your post prompted me to Google the date of the theme and, you're right - a great touch from Paul. It also prompted me to listen to the similar Al Stewart classic which was one of the first tunes I learnt on the guitar:-)

Hi Rocky, yes, Google confirms that FA is the first time it appeared - it's funny how some terms and lines get traction, so to speak - Arnie's "I'll be back" springs to mind:-)

Well I've finished, but I don't enjoy Paul puzzles. 1a I thought really wasn't fair (though I had no problem as I.......(possible spoiler)

Several question marks:
4a if my answer is right, there's an A unaccounted for in the wordplay
10a "peak" to give the 7 letter word?
21a groan!!
22a I see the def. and first 3 letters, but how do you get the last 3?

1a will be easy for anyone who speaks a bit of Italian.

Hi Chris,

4a - I think it's right with "a header" and "a coach"

10a - I thought the same but Chambers gives one def. as "culmination or highest point"

22a - "amateur" as in "??? preacher"
