Crawling towards the finish line on this one. Did the first time through, got the message, think I've amended the directions correctly, can't see the second subject.

Currently trying to work out the second title by working out what letters would fit in the unclued entry. Is this approach likely to work?

Smellyharry, yes that will help. But also think outside the first box when considering the possible candidate titles. A key word in the directions has several possible meanings….

Thanks Jack, got it now. Although not 100% sure what goes in the initially unclued entry, but I'll have a think about it.

Came to the conclusion that the second title goes in, pleased to see that seems to be the consensus having now read the thread. It also means the replacement of the first title with the second title describes what actually happened, which is quite neat.

2 loose ends for me where I can't see the wordplay: 2 and 26. Any hints as to how they work appreciated,

26 is a 3 letter word for song with abbr for an epithet "in"

2D bunk = rubbish, sex is a number

Thanks ixion. I can see 2 now and I already had the song bit of 26. Don't understand how the other 3 letters of 26 are an epithet or the definition really but I'm fairly sure it's right so I'll call it a day at that.

In 26, I think the epithet refers to 1ac, ie the "first light".

SH, in 26 first light refers to 1 across - and the epithet is the abbreviation of the honorific given to the person involved. Took me ages to work that one out!
