The triple letter would not have been a problem for the winner. As he was brought up in North Wales, he would be used to the quadruple "l" in Welsh.

I loved a clue in the Times today:

25A Main opener for Middlesex and Derby — and team-mate (4,6)

...and (6) used to play for Derby...as a batsman!

A few weeks ago, Paul suggested that the (4,6)s in your ladies cricket team were not called....esses. Did you find out what they do call them?

(6) played for 3 Counties plus Tasmania! He was even slower than Sir Geoffrey.

Yes I did attend the last Ladies match of the season. Before the start, I asked Pat Batt, our opener, what our bowling attack was to be.

“We have only two seamers playing today, and two spinners,” she told me.

“You don’t call them seameresses then” I replied.

“No, though funnily enough, both are seamstresses” she said. “Wil Soawitt was in trouble for picking the seam last week, at work that is, not with the umpires. The other, Ida Kneadle, specialises in cross-stitch and cross-seam.”

“As for spinning Jenny is our best option, and because the wicket is expected to take spin, Honor Turner is playing” she continued, “but all the bowlers will have to perform today.”

They certainly did and it was a comfortable victory.

Thanks for the report, it had me in stitches! I am glad your team use the same terminology as ours. I hope Wilhelmina keeps out of trouble as you will need her next season.

I vaguely remember Bowler as a batsman for Derby (opening with Barnett?). What were his other counties?

Peter Bowler... born in Plymouth but raised in Oz - also played for Leicester & Zummerzet!
Some batsmen empty the bars when they go out to bat ... they filled up when Peter was batting!

Discussion on geysers etc. reminds me that, as a child in Scotland, I used to go out at Hallowe'en as a "guiser", i..e. dressed in scary clothing (e.g. as a witch or similar). Pronounced as in disguise. Little groups of us would go round to neighbours and, if lucky, would receive small gifts for some short recitation or performance. Similar, I understand, in Northern Ireland. It still happens but nowadays children usually have to be accompanied by responsible adults.
