That unch in 14 part 1 is indeed a T, Gitto. "Decline" appears as a def in Chambers under SET (as in the sun, I guess).

I normally share your view about puzzles which require a lot of cold solving, but in this case I found the exercise very rewarding. Perhaps I've developed a kind of Stockholm syndrome as a result of the lockdown!

Many thanks to both quisling and Loge. For me the bottom SW corner had me snookered for ages, and I spent a long time wondering why ME related to paddock as always I hadn't looked at the setter. I also had a mild panic when I couldn't find the 2nd name - but of course I was looking for the wrong name.

Same here on your last point, Gitto. The Wikipedia article uses the slightly shorter name and I wonder how many people will be held up on the final stretch by that.

This feels close to being put in the too difficult box for me.

I’ve almost done the left hand side but am confused as thought the “competitor” would be in the column of unchs. Am I looking in the wrong place? I may have some of them wrong too!
