Thanks hw7. The penultimate clue was my ultimate answer... even with your helpful parsing it took me a while, but I got there in the end. Phew! A devious and ingenious clue.

Evening all, I see that there was a bit of a rumpus last week - it seems to be a cyclic event, the last one being in December 2018 I think, when I was somewhat involved!

I have filled the grid and got the thematic replacements but am now grid staring - any sort of oblique nudge as to where I might find one of these words would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
