unclued

20th November 2019, 10:20
Finally finished. It’s unusual for me to take until a Wednesday for one of these puzzles.

Can someone confirm that my two unclued entries are correct - both are entered “normally” with no distorted characters, one fits groups normal / east west flip and the other normal / north south flip.

I believe that’s correct, unclued. If you go back to #69 you will find the definitions and placement as confirmation

I entered both normally, but didn't flip the north-south one.

No idea if that's right or not. By the end of rotating characters etc I expected I'd done something wrong, so just sealed the envelope and tried - unsuccessfully - to forget about it.

Both unclued entries will look the same normal as flipped, jazzlover42, because the line of symmetry runs all the way through each. So you should be fine

Thanks so much. Realised that across, because there were 3 options but only symmetrical, but didn't give it a thought on the down entry.

The M's are no more 'drunk' that the inverted A of NEATED/NOMINA; they are just flipped/rotated.

I am having great difficulty with this one. Despite having read all the comments here, I cannot decide whether the rotation of an across answer will have the same effect as an east-west flip of it. The same applies rotation and north-south flips. Rotation could mean that the whole word is rotated (i.e. entered in reverse order), or the letters are entered in their correct order but rotated by 90 degrees, which is what happens in the relevant misprint.

No 0pt0, they are not the same. Rotation means that the word is entered upside down. Imagine turning the grid upside down and writing the word in. It’s a rotation of 180 degrees. EW reversal means entering the word the same way up but from right to left, with each letter backwards. So the word HIM would be entered as WIH if it was rotated, and MIH if it was EW reversed

And likewise, HIM would be entered HIW if it was NS reversed
