Just to reinforce your point,(hw77), Chambers confirms the use of the single word as sufficient for the meaning.

Small point but the final instruction is slightly ambiguous. You could follow it accurately by just overwriting all the cells within the perimeter with just 2 large thematic items. They don’t even need to be different or related to the jumbles they are replacing.
It would be better if the third word of the instruction was moved to the beginning.
Having said that it is obvious what is intended. I really enjoyed this puzzle. Much less traumatic than last weeks.

Still puzzling over three clues. I can’t solve 21a or 29a. Also I can’t parse 20a. Any hints would be much appreciated.

Casanova, in 29 'Points',verb, is the definition. It's concealed in the clue...and remember 'towards the west' (and the extra letter stuff).

Thank you Malone and drxx. After seeing the answer to 29a I realise I have 22d incorrectly. I had the correct answer to 21a in the early stages of solving. Just couldn’t parse 20a despite knowing that the extra letter must be a p

What a construction!

Ironically I wasn't unduly held up by the 4/5 solution. I didn't think it any more obscure than (say) Cote D'Ivoire would have been. My bete noire was the 3/6 which took me ages!!
