Sue, the 'horse' in 32 D is not an animal....

As the man said - d'oh! Pity about the red herrings though ('and pumps or foot pumps?), and Corbett uses a climbing device of the type specified.

@malone - I already thought of that, still none the wiser! I have ?ACA and there are only a couple of possibilities but neither of them make sense to me. Pretty sure the crossers are correct.

Not a big fan of this puzzle in the end. When I spotted the theme I loved it, but the clashes were just to fit in with the resulting down words, and the bottom line's a jumble of parts (which I suppose is thematic in a way).

Sue, I just did a dictionary search when I had the same letters as you... it didn't take long.

I quite enjoyed this, apart from the bottom line.

My bad, too much reliance on TEA.

Agree a good puzzle.
However I am worried that after putting 9 letters in the bottom row I am left with an “i”. It could possibly go under the “n” in 42a bit that gives an abbreviation not a word. To be fair I now have an abbreviation in the new 25d though. I also have a 42d. I don’t extend 30 (fair enough) or 31 (but why then does the setter make me change the clash). Also 20 is not extended but is no longer a word after removing the object. Have I got something wrong? If not it seems a bit messy.

Smithsax, there are several non-words after the large item has been removed. There's nothing in the preamble to suggest otherwise. As for your missing I, two are needed in the bottome row; one can go under cell no 42, the other extends 28dn (perhaps you have extended 28 with an E).

I assume the changed selection of two clashes, technically unnecessary, represents the two characters disappearing from the scene.

Thanks murky. Yes the “e” incorrectly added to 28 was my mistake.

Does anyone understand the significance of the title?
