One can go off people... I had a totally cricket-free day until you stuck your oar (bat?) in. As a tennis fan, I had no problems whatsoever with that clue!

Yes of course - I didn't realise you had them in racquet sports. I suppose it is the centre of a racquet, whereas with a cricket bat, it is below the centre of the blade/(oar?). Apologies if you knew that.

I was relieved more than anything else - and didn't even stop to wonder if 'sweet spots' featured in more than just tennis. I think I've been quite lucky, we don't get too many cricket-ty clues! I am, of course, always vigilant... just in case.

PS I've never liked the word 'racquet' - I think it's the 'c' being next to the 'q', it always looks a little odd to me.

Yes I prefer racket, but that was a serious mistake at school.

I could not parse "churl" in the Times yesterday.

I got Churl =def, and can see H and L for husband and Large but I am stumped(!)

For your clue, I think the 'force' is the RUC, Royal Ulster Constabulary.' And 'going west' - it becomes CUR.

Jigjag, I've always known Ogress... but I don't know how or why! I think 'ogre' is relatively common in everyday language, but I've never heard anyone actually say the word 'ogress'.
