I didnt like the clue but the homophone works for me.

I hope you are well and send my best wishes. We will miss you on this thread (and others) and look forward to your return.

I like your R posting. I dont use them much.

I should like to echo Grunger's sentiments. We will miss you very much and hope to see you here again soon.

ChrisE, thanks - that was just a piece of nonsense! My next campaign might be to boycott the letter R ...

Grunger,

It's not today's setter's fault that we're having a run, a spate of homophone clues that don't work nationwide .Still, I am resigned to my fate - if a clue works for the majority of solvers, I'll just have to grin and bear it (and have a good moan, either privately or on here!).

PS I hope it's not a disappointment that I've returned so soon? Thanks for your kind wishes!

Jigjag,

Thanks, that was very kind of you.

Maybe you don't use many Rs in writing as you need so many for speech?

My trip away was very brief, just a rapid restocking... oh no, I'm doing it again...

So I went to my local cocktail bar (yes, I have one, actually it’s a converted subterranean former public toilet, but I digress...) anyway it turns out the ‘Gin and It’ is a very fine thing, I recommend a lemon twist!

Glad you enjoyed it (with the gin). Did they understand you when you ordered it?

Hi grunger, well it raised an eyebrow but yes they knew it. Served ‘straight up’ involving a 50/50 mix shaken with ice and then strained into a glass, with the lemon twist. I felt it was essential crossword research

Re understanding an order - a few years ago ZA became allowable in Scrabble. Although knowledge of meanings is not required, the definition is 'short for pizza (US)'. Apparently Stephen Fry tested the word verbally in a New York restaurant and was not understood.

At least the crosswords I do have 3-letter minimum solutions.
