Look closely at at the letters given by the first clue L to the third clue E - a simple acrostic!

That was some red herring by the way, Still don't see the quote.

Yes I saw the acrostic. I still do not see the point.

Given that it's a carte blanche, maybe Xanthippe wanted to let the dog see the rabbit?

I still need two.

C. Doctor runs south of source of Ouse (5)

The 14 letter. I can make a phrase 6,2,6 with first and third word same.
The 10th letter has to change.

I do not know the work or the author.
Is it a diagonal line?

Thanks.

Hi Sunray,
Doctor is definition, as given answer begins with C, then followed by the major river which merges with a tributary to form the Ouse, followed by r(uns).
P2P is correct.
Be careful when selecting your spy (as per puzzle title).

Thanks meursalt.
Did not know that river.

Are you saying that Sean Connery character may be a decoy?
The author of those stories is 3,7. Nor 1,1,7 as suggested earlier.
One still needs 9 letters for the character's name.

If the last name of the author begins with F and ends in G, two cells above F have two letters each.

Still confused.

In the same two lines are options for different characters and creators. Which is quite clever. But still the phrase must be found. More grid staring I'm afraid, Sunray, which to my mind marks this puzzle down (if we wanted to do wordsearch, we'd buy a wordsearch puzzle, not a cryptic one).
