I agree Mersault. I’m pleased I’d solved it before you posted.

Finally twigged 24d after realising that I was barking up completely the wrong tree! I am however still puzzling over the name and 4 lines, I am sure it's blindingly obvious but just not to me.

Planks

Google-the quotation.

You then get another name and an image on Wikipedia

As throck pointed out at the beginning of the thread there are three options for 34d. The one that might be considered too generic isn't because it's the first name of a very famous artist. It may not be in the Chambers Names appendix, but then neither is LES.

Assuming that I've understood which quotation we're using, how is "dance" a measure, or "sing"?

Both dance and a strain as in a song or singing are definitions of measure in Chambers.

Just to satisfy my curiosity, can anyone tell me whether the quotation from the work appears in the current edition of ODQ. In my edition, the sixth, there is only one quote from the work and it's completely irrelevant. I had to google for other quotes to find the relevant one. That's not very satisfactory since Listener puzzles are not supposed to be dependent on the internet. I suppose one could trawl through the whole work, but that's a tall order.

I thought the clues pretty poor on the whole; some of the surfaces barely make sense. I expect more from a Listener puzzle.
