Hi all. Have nearly managed to get to the end of this one (with a couple of nudges from here...) but I am drawing a blank on my final clue. 42a I have US?NT and for the life of me I can't decipher any real word from that and the clue. A final push would be much appreciated.

Charlesburg - there's an apostrophe before the T making it a familiar short form of 2 words. Old smell means an old spelling for a word for smell. Hope this helps.
