Plugging away..... I cannot verify 1D but suspect the enamel comes from a possibly very dark place

Re your earlier question, yes they are in clue order but it is a fairly unusual word. Have full grid with modifications except uncertain about 34dn. Have grid stared for hours and cannot see anything reflected symmetrically or otherwise! Hoping someone can put me out of my misery with a nudge ...

Yes Planks, that did clarify things for 43 ac.
As regards 34 I'm tending towards the desperate comic name - as one alternative is too generic and the other too rare - but still not sure. What has Zambia to do with anything?
When looking for the author perhaps check that you are looking for the right one

Zambia - Z for D. I did think there could be another author but Google threw me a blank, just came up with the old fella. I'll look again ....

Aspria

For the original solution, you need a word for "settles down", then replace D by Z. I've no idea what the entry is, as I still have no sense of what's happening!

I'm thinking cow pie too regarding 34dn, if only as it is the only one listed as a diminutive in the names section of the BRB. Though that said not all the others are either, even a very common one.

Hi S_Pugh. The question as to which name is substituted in is one I've pondered for quite a while. And surely there must be a way to check that we have chosen the right names ? But if there is, I haven't seen it. So, I have Sion, Ron, Ray, Tom, Len Les, Brett, Chas, Dan & Rob. Does anyone disagree with any of these ?
