Typo, it should be 16a.

Can anyone tell me how I am meant to find the quotation ? Is there a hint somewhere or is it supposed to materialise out of thin air ?!

samovar - if you have the 10 letter name of the work (from the first letters of the clues of amended clues in order) - google it followed by 'quotes' - Will probably show 2 and the second one is the one that apertains..

The relevant part of the full quotation (the beginning) is probably the only well known one from the work. If you Google the work + quotations it should be apparent.
Earlier posts give more details of the required substitutions.

Thanks so much Crates and Ginge, but I am ashamed to say that I don't understand how to amend the clues. I thought the quotation was meant to explain that. (As in if the quotation were something like "The first shall be last etc). This is only the third Listener Crossword I have attempted and I think the first two must have been comparatively easy !

The relevant quotation (since the relevant words are mentioned in earlier posts) is "man is the measure of all things " so substitute a man's name (or shortened form) for definitions of measure (worth looking up measure in Chambers).

I should have added the substitution takes place in parts of each relevant answer.

Samovar - You may well want to proceed yourself - but if you do get stumped, post 20 listed in clue order the substituted names - I would peek only if you need to do so....
