Hi, Rusty!
I have taken a quick look at the suggested "Monks' diet".
Umm.....I am sure that there is a lot of good common sense advice somewhere in all that taradiddle, but sorting it out would be a nightmare!
I think I will stick to my own "common sense", and eat and drink what I consider is expedient.
I don't need to lose weight - yes, I 'd like to remain healthy, but do I want to live to be over a hundred?
My friend 's mother-in- law is now 105 and in pretty good nick!
She is physically fit for 105, in that, although frail, she has no specific health problems.
She is also fully mentally alert.
Interestingly, she is on no medication whatsoever!
Are you intimating that the reason the monks live such long lives is because women are not allowed into the monastery?
(You could well be right!)

Hello, Elle,
Their healthy long lives are down to a disciplined life and diet.
Hard work, frugality, and no nagging women, all play a part.
There is much there we can all take a bit of.
I eat more lentils now and rarely eat meat.
I'd say there will be clever folk going there analysing everything to see how they keep diseases away.
I have noticed this day, that the pictures from the loch are a lot better quality today. A lot sharper, I think.

Hi, Rusty!
I refuse to rise to the reference about "nagging women"............monks, one would assume, should require no need to be "nagged"......!
You may well be right about the quality of the osprey video.
I have just looked at it with a critical eye, and yes, it does appear to be exceptionally clear, altho I have to admit to noticing no difference when I looked in earlier.

I do so hate the terms "good cholesterol" and "bad cholesterol". Cholesterol is a single compound, so can't be both good and bad at the same time. The reference is to high-desnity lipoproteins and low-density lipoproteins.

My last blood and blood pressure tests were marginal, so I was offered statins. I said "no thanks".

I guess they are aiming at your average man on the street, though, Chris. with their terminology.
It is different for you as you have a chemistry degree.
And there is a formula for working out the LDL, of which many GPs seem to be unaware. My own GP insists on telling me my Total cholesterol, which is wrong.
But you must be genned up on all this...isn't your wife a doctor?

Good for you, chrise.
Statins damage muscle cells, which includes heart muscle, stem cells and nerve cells. They have recently been implicated in an increase in diabetes. The destroyed muscle cell components get to the kidneys and damage them.
The American drug industry will one day face a tsunami of compensation claims for the tragedy it has knowingly unleashed.
You need cholesterol (for e.g. cell membranes, Vitamin D, bile, hormones.) Why otherwise would your body make it?

Yes, this is all beginning to come to light now, Ros.
For some reason radio hosts seem to delight in talking about it in the early morning.........just the thing to cheer you up and get your day off to a good start.
I wonder will the medics now do an about -face and reverse the decision to (attempt to) treat all over 50s with statins?

Thanks for that elle, I don't listen to the radio and I'm interested in all aspects of statin use, which has been driven ruthlessly by the US Pharmaceutical companies.
The damage they have done, and continue to do will one day be seen to be the tragedy that it is.
ironically, Merck have now produced Juvisync, combining simvastatin and a drug treating of Type 2 diabetes in one tablet. A recent 6 year long study in Finland concluded that there was an increased risk of 46% of Type 2 diabetes in men taking statins - including simvastatin- all other factors having been eliminated. Women were not studied and the authors were careful to say this was a risk study.
