Hi Elle
Pleased you received a good response from Mr Rogan of the Times concerning the Town/City matter.
Civic pride and local rivalry make it important to get things right - what they do in America is their problem...the clue did specifically refer to `English`
Well done and Seasons Greetings - hope you don`t mind me intruding!

Hello, Elle!
Well done, the plumber!
Best follow his advice until tomorrow.
Your new found plumber will appreciate the coffees.
It is not everyone who would be as thoughtful as you.
(I hear the tales from my sons!)
And he will also appreciate you passing his name on to your neighbours.
Is he a local lad?
And you got "Bayern Munich" in the puzzle?
I am impressed!

Hi, Rusty!
Yes, the plumber did a very good job!
He will be returning after Christmas to replace the toilet seat, which he accidentally broke.
I was most impressed, though, that he would not let us pay him, until he had come back to fix a new seat.
Yes, a nice man.
His name will go on my list!
Yes, I could do "Bayern Munich", but probably only because I realised that it was an anagram!
I cannot parse 19a: Securing organic compound - container must be sound (9)
I have tethering = securing (def)
ether - organic compound
tin - container
but where does the "g" come from?
I cannot tie that in with "must be sound"?
Where am I going wrong, please?

Hello, Tyke!
Of course you are not intruding!
Yes, it was very good of Mr Rogan to respond personally to my query.......
And it was nice to be acknowledged as correct!
Merry Christmas to you, too!

Hello, Elle!
Your plumber sounds (d'ye get it?!) like the real deal!
Put him in your "help" book!
19a was one of those when I just could not quite see what the setter meant.
My fault, I am sure!
Anyway, my guess is, "ether" is a compound (I think), and the "container" is a word surrounding "ether".
I don't know why "must" is in the clue, but I think "ting" is the "container word" and "sound".
If so, I am not overly impressed, but I may have the parse wrong.

Hello Elle, Rusty, Ros and everyone!

Good about your plumber Elle! At least the job is done, and well done,
before Christmas!

Fancy forgetting the ginger Ros! If you did initially buy it, you may
well find it around Easter time in the most unusual place!

Now, I know this is the PCT and not the crossword solving
general thread, but could one of you help me with the parsing
of 2d on the Sunday Times (I am very late in finishing it!)

Clue: Robust measure taken about blue movie with many cuts (9)
Answer : HALLOWEEN (I think)
Just can't see why! Can you help please?

Piage, Hale = Robust, En = measure (in printing_ and Low = blue, all leading to Halloween, movie with many cuts. Hal low e en.

Thank you Malone - Not sure I understand the 'cuts' business,
Never heard of a film with cuts - I must be rather dense here!

I've never seen Halloween, Pigale - but know it's a horror film, so assume it has lots of cuts in it!

Thanks again Malone! I am obviously not 'au fait' with film-making terminology!

Hi malone and pigale - I believe such films are known as `slasher` movies - not my idea of entertainment!
