16ac is not in Chambers, or at least not in the edition I own but it's part of a place-name (think *****ian Islands). The first three letters are a word for beer which also means a drinking festival and the last two letters are really a Latin word which means "as". 26 down is also a place-name which is not in Chambers.
Chambers does list "steel" as an adjective, so I suppose you could make its comparative just by adding "er". Doesn't sound right, though.

Oncer and one-er both mean the same thing. I can't work out which is correct yet. Radius one makes more sense, as it is on one line and is the diameter of the circle, paradoxically.

It's One-er. Pioneer is a military artisan, minus the thematic symbol at the heart of the puzzle.

I still think for pi r squared the descending TWO from the square above 25 at the end of radius makes so much more sense than radius one.

And finally......... Am I correct in having Y as the change in 2d? Does the spelling of the first revealed word have any significance? The whole phrase gives weight to radius one but I am no mathematician so I do not understand how radius one makes sense. Oh well!

Given the phrase formed by the misprints in the down clues I don't think there can be much doubt about the choice between "one" and "two".

Half of me agrees. The other half sees area at the bottom of the circle and leads me to pr2.
I note pi=C/D which supports one though radiusone as a diameter is strange.

If the radius is one, then the area = pi x radius squared will be pi x 1 x 1, so fits what is to be highlighted.
