Almost completed the grid, but have no idea what to do with the initial letters from the discarded words.

Clue, anyone?

The final grid will not be as the initial fill. You should see some emerging patterns that will give you a clue as to how to move things about. Once you sort out the grid-fill the initial letters begin to make sense.

Hmm. Yes, I see the XY-YX patterns, but can't think how to modify the grid.

I found it useful to focus initially on the RH two thirds of the grid

Can anyone give some more clues about how to finish this one. I'm totally confused!

You have to do something with columns 5-8 and 9-12

You have to do something with the top half of columns 1-4 and the bottom half

Sorry to be slow, but I still can't see what to do.

Could you give another hint, without completely giving the game away?

Hard to hint without telling but it involves swapping the position of columns. You need to move columns 5-8 en masse and replace with 4 others- hand mill and mill hand give the hint.

You then need to move the top half of the other columns down.

The grid then does something that is very clever

The silly thing is, I've been contemplating that sort of move ever since I filled the grid, having spotted the various pairs of relevant words, but I still don't see it.

Do we just swap columns 5-8 with columns 9-12 and then swap the top half of rows 1-4 with the bottom half? That doesn't seem to work.

You need to look at the clashes.
